“Once Upon a Time …No, No, this is a True Story!”

“Once Upon a Time …No, No, this is a True Story!”

Dr. George Truett, at the time Pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, was being entertained in the home of a wealthy Texas oilman. After dinner the millionaire took Dr. Truett to the roof top terrace of his house.

In one direction, he pointed to all the huge oil derricks dotting the landscape. “I came to Texas a penniless man 25 years ago. Now I own that land and all those oil wells.” Then the man turned in another direction. “Do you see all those houses? I own the land, built every house on that land. Those houses are mine.” He turned in another direction, pointed, and made this claim. “Do you see those golden wheat shocks? They are ready for harvest. All that harvest is worth millions of dollars, and it’s all mine. I worked hard, saved, scrimped, and now because I have used my own intellect, and my own body, everything you see in all directions is mine!”

Dr. Truett did not reply for a long time. The rich man assumed the pastor was beyond amazement at the man’s wealth. Then he laid his hand on the man’s shoulder, and pointed up. “My fiend, how much do you own in that direction?” The wealthy man began to well up with tears in his eyes. He replied, “I never thought of that!”

Wise people, that is followers of Jesus, are aware of Jesus’ presence in every direction of life. Your ability to think, your healthy body, your eyesight, a sharp mind, what you own … it’s all a gift from your Father in Heaven.

When you opened the last gift you received this year, did you think, “Is that all there is?” It doesn’t have to be. The greatest gift ever is, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. John 3:16

Jesus warned us, “Do not lay up treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroys and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up treasures in heaven, where neither rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will also be.”  Mt. 6:19

Serious followers of Jesus are aware that in every direction, including upward, Jesus is the center of everything. “In Him we live, move, and have our very being.” Acts 17:28a
